Churches in Derby took to the open air at the end of June
as part of Hope ‘08, to reach out to the communities around them with
the love of Jesus. In Mackworth, Normanton and Pride Park, fun activities and
food drew the crowds - and the weather held out as well!
Derby City Church has plans to move their premises to Mackworth soon, so their
fun day was the ideal opportunity to make local connections with the community
around them. They had bouncy castles, face painting and a barbecue all on offer
as part of the day’s activities.
In Pride Park, Community Church Derby held a ‘Fun for Funds’ day
(building on the success of a similar day last year). As well as having a great
time - with entertainment, circus skills, workshop, games, tombola, raffle,
fancy dress, inflatables, art activities, car boot, scaletrix, arts and craft
tables and food from around the world - they raised funds for a number of local
and international charities as they went. The underlying message of the day
was that everyone matters.
In Normanton, New Life Christian Centre put on a Free Lunch, with some busking
at the front of the building to attract people in.
Derby City Mission were co-ordinating the weekend’s activities across
the city, After the event, Director Alasdair Kay said, “We do hope you
had a great weekend, I certainly did, it was great to get around and see some
of your Hope ‘08 projects ... as people reached out in practical ways
to their communities. It was a truly a party of grace this weekend.”
