The current Bishops in Derbyshire have been paying tribute to one of their predecessors.

Stephen Verney, who was Bishop of Repton from 1977 - 1983 died on 9th November, aged 90 in Oxford.

The current Bishop of Repton, Humphrey Southern, said, “Bishop Stephen is fondly remembered by generations of Derby clergy for his ministry in this Diocese, and especially as an inspirational training director.”

Before coming to the Diocese of Derby, Bishop Verney was a Canon of Coventry and of Windsor following a parish ministry mostly in the diocese of Coventry.

He was the author of several books, of which his introduction to the Gospel of John - Water into Wine (1985) - is one of the most loved and admired.

The Bishop of Derby, Alastair Redfern, said that he joined Bishop Southern and many others in the Diocese in offering prayers of thanksgiving for Bishop Stephen's life and ministry.
