The new Dean of Derby has been announced. Dr John Davies,
who has been vicar of the Melbourne Group of parishes, and Chairman of Industrial
Mission in Derbyshire, will succeed Dr Jeff Cuttell who left his post earlier
this year.
He will assume day to day responsibility for the work of
the Cathedral in the City, County and Diocese when he takes up his new responsibilities
in the autumn.
Dr Davies, 52, studied at Keble College Oxford where he
was later a chaplain and taught theology, and gained his Doctorate from Lancaster
University. He studied for the priesthood at Westcott House Cambridge and was
ordained priest in 1985. He has served at various churches on Merseyside, as
well as at Peterborough Cathedral.
He came to Melbourne in 1999 and was also Diocesan Director
of Ordinands until last year. In his current parish context he has worked closely
with a large team of clergy and lay ministers. He is a representative of Derby
Diocese on the General Synod, and an Honorary Canon of Derby.
He said, “My ten years at Melbourne, with its local
villages too, have been a really happy time. But the challenge and privilege
of leading the work of Derby Cathedral was an offer I could not pass up and
I am greatly looking forward to this new challenge.”
