A Derbyshire bookshop has marked it’s Silver Jubilee
recently with an anniversary service of thanksgiving.
Buxton Christian Bookshop started life back in 1985 at the
Buxton Bargain Centre. After only two years, they moved to their current site
at 2/4 Market Street, right in the heart of the town. Their aim is to promote
Christianity, “By retailing Christian books, Bibles, cards and other items
with a Christian message.”
The shop is run by a team of volunteers and part-time employees,
overseen by a board of trustees. They are an independent shop, but have the
support of churches across the denominations. The shop has kept going despite
the economic downturn, the rise of the Internet, a generation that reads less,
and national trends away from the faith.
Christians from the town, including many who have been involved
with the shop over the years, gathered to give thanks at Fairfield Methodist
Church on 30th June. They recognised at the occasion that all the glory belongs
to God for the work, and celebrated all that has happened over the years. They
still affirm that “We are here to be of use to the church, an open door
for all denominations and to serve the Christian community and visitors.”
